Wendy uses a combination of approaches including but not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy and Problem Focused Therapy.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or CBT is a psychological treatment that has proven to be one of the most effective treatments for management of many problems, particularly anxiety. CBT includes the teaching and learning of skills to manage your emotions and symptoms. You are taught new ways of thinking and behaving that can help you get control of unwanted feelings and actions. The focus is on what is happening right now, not just looking in depth at the origin of the problem. This is because only knowing why you have the problem is often insufficient in managing the issue. Use of CBT involves homework where you practice your new skills intently and purposefully each week and sometimes each day. Practicing the skills when the situation is not intense will allow you to have the ability to draw upon the learned skill when needed most. Practicing each day makes them a part of your life. Overall, CBT is structured and educational, it is collaborative work between you and your counsellor. You get out of it what you put into it. CBT is time limited, so you won’t require therapy for years. You can gain sufficient skill between 8-12 sessions.

Problem Focused counselling allows you to focus onto the problem while being guided through relaxation techniques and the restructuring and changing your thoughts and thinking patterns. There are two types of thinking; conscious and subconscious thinking. The unconscious mind allows you to choose your thought and feeling. You can choose to feel depressed or you can choose to feel happy. No matter what your choice is, your unconscious will allow it and then you will feel it.

Solution Focused counselling involves envisioning the future without today’s problems. For those who do not wish to rethink and relive past experiences this form of counselling may be of interest to you. During the course of counselling you will be aided towards discovering solutions and your strengths and use them to bypass the perceived barriers to these solutions. The emphasis is on the future not the past. The role of the counsellor is to help you to identify solutions that will remove barriers in living the life you want. This can be a very empowering and uplifting process.
